Union Takes Out ICC Mens Badminton Title

While it might have been a rainy and miserable weekend putting many sports across Brisbane on hold, this weekend saw perfect conditions in the UQ Sports Hall for Union College to dominate in the Inter College (ICC) Badminton Competition. Badminton convenor, Lachlan McKay said it was a brilliant tournament for Union and he couldn’t be more pleased with the way Union players and supporters alike demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship.

Union’s mens duo Ci Yong (Charles) Chua and Carl Vern Chew went through the whole tournament without losing a set or even coming close to losing a set! The closest game the pair had was 21-15, however most games they didn’t even let the other team see double digits. Despite their flawless performances (6 wins and 0 losses) Charles and Carl showed exceptional sportsmanship in remaining humble and gracious throughout the entire tournament. True class, well done gents! The undefeated pair took home first place and the ICC pennant for badminton all while Charles barely broke a sweat!

The female badminton team consisted of Kitty Ji and Lauren Baade who showed great character and refused to roll over without a fight. A notable match for the pair went all the way to 29-27! Of their 7 matches, the girls won 3 which places them at the middle of the table for this tournament. Well done to Lauren who played exceptionally well, especially with virtually no prior badminton experience.

Convenor Lachlan, would like to extend a massive thank you to all of the Union supporters who attended over the two days. Union had arguably the biggest crowd of any college on Friday night and still had a number of people show up on Sunday despite the torrential downpour they had to brave to walk to the sports hall! It made all the difference to the players being able to perform in front of a sea of red.

It’s fantastic to see our residents excelling at their chosen extracurricular activities but even more so when it’s done with such great sportsmanship in front of a supportive Union crowd; a true show of the Union College spirit!
