Our History

Our story is just as unique as our residents.

Union College is a landmark in Queensland’s education and social history. We were established as the first all-gender residential college in the state, reflecting a shift in social values and a distinct, progressive step in student living and inclusivity.

Our physical presence is equally significant. Designed in 1963 by architect James Birrell, our college is widely praised for its innovative and environmentally conscious design. Our residential halls are a three-storey block, elevated above our main facilities, so that the dorms capture cooling river breezes and sweeping panoramic views of the surrounds.

The arrangement of buildings creates a series of intimate, lush inner courtyards, encouraging both community interaction and quiet reflection. One of our distinctive features is the extensive use of locally sourced Mt Coot‑tha blue‑stone, grounding the College in our natural setting.

In recognition of our cultural, social, and architectural significance, Union College was heritage listed in 2004.

We're proud of our history. Today, we continue to innovate and lead in how we support emerging adults to live together respectfully and safely. We stand not only as a place of significant architecture, rich history, and as the halls of academic residency, but beyond that – as a bustling community.

Over 60 years on, we’re still bucking trends.
